oFilm — Scalable Online Video Streaming Platform

My role: Architecture design, full-stack development, and DevOps infrastructure implementation

Overview

oFilm is an online video streaming platform designed and built with a particular focus on scalability, stability under heavy load, and a smooth user experience. Rather than a typical feature-first build, the architecture was designed from day one to keep performing reliably under concurrent traffic spikes without degrading service quality.

Key Features

  • Adaptive bitrate streaming that automatically adjusts playback quality to the user's connection speed
  • A queue-based background processing system that transcodes uploaded videos into multiple quality levels without blocking user requests
  • An Elasticsearch-powered search engine for fast, accurate search across thousands of titles
  • A content recommendation engine based on each user's watch history
  • A content management panel with bulk uploads, scheduled publishing, and user access control
  • Server-side rendering (SSR) with Nuxt 3 for faster page loads and better SEO

Infrastructure & DevOps

One of the most important parts of this project was its DevOps infrastructure. Services were containerized with Docker, and Kubernetes was used to orchestrate them for horizontal scalability — meaning the system can automatically spin up additional service instances as traffic grows. Incoming traffic is distributed through Nginx acting as a reverse proxy and load balancer. A CI/CD pipeline was set up so that every code change, after passing automated tests, gets deployed to production with zero downtime. The primary database is PostgreSQL, and a microservices architecture separates independent parts of the system (such as the transcoding service and the core application) to keep response times high under heavy load.

My Role

I was responsible for everything from the initial architecture design to the full implementation of the backend (Laravel), frontend (Nuxt 3), and DevOps infrastructure (Docker, Kubernetes, Nginx, CI/CD) — as well as the ongoing monitoring and performance optimization of the system under real-world traffic.
