Team Git Workflow: From Feature Branches to Code Review

Why Pushing Directly to Main Causes Problems

In small teams, the temptation to push straight to the main branch is strong. But this quickly lets incomplete or untested code into the main codebase, and makes it hard to trace which change caused which problem.

The Feature Branch Pattern

In this approach, every feature or bug fix is developed on its own branch (e.g. feature/checkout-page). This isolation lets each developer work freely without affecting anyone else's work.

Code Review Isn't Just a Formality

Before a branch merges into main, one or more teammates review the code via a Pull Request. This step isn't only about catching bugs — it's a chance to spread knowledge across the team and keep coding style consistent.

A Few Simple Rules That Work

  • Write small commits with clear messages — not one giant commit that says "fix stuff."
  • Make sure tests pass before opening a Pull Request.
  • Delete merged branches to keep the repository clean.

Takeaway

This process feels a bit slower at first, but as a team grows, that same discipline is exactly what prevents chaos and expensive bugs later on.
