GraphQL vs REST API: Which Should You Choose for Your Next Project?

REST: The Old, Reliable Standard
REST has been the default way to build APIs for years. Its simple structure, strong HTTP-level cacheability, and near-universal language support make it a safe default. Its main drawback is "over-fetching" or "under-fetching" — clients either receive more data than they need or have to make several separate requests to get everything.
GraphQL: Flexibility in the Client's Hands
GraphQL solves this by letting the client specify exactly which fields it needs, and the server returns only that. This is especially valuable for bandwidth-constrained mobile apps or complex dashboards with deeply nested data.
When to Choose Which
If your project is simple, your team is small, or you rely heavily on HTTP caching, REST is still the more sensible choice. But if you're serving several different clients (web, mobile, admin panel) with different data needs, GraphQL can drastically cut down on request count and payload size.
Takeaway
Neither is "objectively better" — the right choice depends on your architecture, number of clients, and team experience. Many real-world projects even mix both: REST for simple operations, GraphQL for complex pages.
