1. Pull Logic Out of Controllers
Fat controllers are one of the most common problems in Laravel projects. Move complex logic into Service or Action classes so controllers only handle receiving requests and returning responses.
2. Use Form Requests for Validation
Instead of writing validation rules directly in the controller, use FormRequest classes. This keeps controllers cleaner and makes validation logic reusable.
3. Standardize Responses With API Resources
Never return Eloquent models directly as a JSON response. Resource classes give you full control over exactly which fields, in which format, get sent to the client.
4. Use Eager Loading to Avoid N+1 Queries
The N+1 query problem is one of the most common performance issues in Laravel. Using with() on relationships dramatically cuts down the number of database queries.
5. Write Tests, Even Simple Ones
A simple feature test that checks a feature's happy path beats no test at all. Laravel gives you excellent tooling for this with PHPUnit and Pest.
