Both Are About Managing Containers
Docker Compose defines and runs several related containerized services on one machine (or a handful of simple ones). Kubernetes is a full orchestration system that manages containers at a much larger scale, across many servers.
The Natural Growth Path
For most early-stage projects, or ones running on one to a few servers, Docker Compose is simpler, faster to set up, and entirely sufficient. Once a project needs automatic scaling, automatic recovery from server failure, or coordination across multiple teams, Kubernetes starts to make sense. Jumping straight to Kubernetes for a small project usually adds more complexity than value.
